With the goal of having our students complete a service opportunity at each location, we facilitated one field trip per grade level per instructional quarter. Through content connections and self-reflection, students had multiple opportunities for hands-on growth and learning. These community partners then cooperated in family engagement events at our school to show parents the opportunities available for all.

Putting the Community in Communication: How to Make Student Presentations Effective and engaging for the entire classroom
Tuesday August 6, 2024 12:00pm - 12:40pm EDT

While student ownership and authentic engagement are often displayed through a presentation, the engagement of the students watching the presentation can be a challenge. This session is designed for secondary teachers of all subjects seeking strategies to help build a classroom community where students can encourage, support, and effectively evaluate each other. The session provides strategies to engage all students--whether standing in front of the group or watching from their seats. We will also cover some teacher-generated requirements designed to make those presentation skills more polished. Public speaking skills are not intuitive; they need to be taught, and this session provides specific elements to build into assignments that will guide and challenge the students to improve both their presenting and spectating skills.

Decodable Readers and AI: Making Personalized Decodable Readers for Hard to Reach Students
Tuesday August 6, 2024 12:50pm - 1:30pm EDT
TBD
Dive into using text generative AI with Brisk learning! I have used this in tier 2 and tier 3 instruction for struggling readers with decoding. What's especially powerful about it is the range of options with text generation. Have a 2nd grader that needs a very special story about Pokémon, but still practicing specific letter sounds? How about a 5th grade student with extreme decoding difficulties who wants to access the content curriculum independently? You can make an appropriate reader all about the Revolutionary War or Force and Motion. You can even create multiple choice comprehension questions within a document or export them into a google form. Brisk allows you generate a multitude of quick, rich text to tie directly into tier high tier instruction, specially designed instruction, and making content available to all readers. With a few prompts, you can generate text students will want to read that directly ties into what you are teaching.
